Meet Angela
Dr. Angela Byars-Winston is a nationally recognized mentorship researcher, thought leader, and Vilas Distinguished Achievement Professor of Medicine at the University of Wisconsin. A counseling psychologist by training, she conducts groundbreaking research rooted in social cognitive career theory to explore how culture, mentorship, human connection, and individuals’ lived experiences can help people reach their fullest potential in STEMM (+M = medicine). Over the past three decades, she has used her findings to shape numerous national conversations on advancing support, equity, authenticity, and human flourishing in life, academia, and the workplace.
Known as a “scientist with heart,” Dr. Byars-Winston has spoken to audiences nationwide, where her scientific research often opens the door to conversations about resilience, adversity, and wellness. For her contributions to the advancement of diversity goals and mentorship in STEMM, she has been selected as a White House Champion of Change, awarded the Innovation in Mentorship Research Award from the Association of Clinical and Translational Research, and elected as a Fellow of the American Psychological Association. She has also consulted for several private biomedical organizations, including the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, and big pharma companies, including Bristol Myers Squibb, bringing her people-focused perspective beyond academia.
Her work is grounded in a belief informed by both research and lived experience: that flourishing is possible in spite of life’s challenges when people are willing to meaningfully pursue their highest and best selves. Whether conducting research, mentoring, speaking, or sharing lessons from the “heart space,” Dr. Byars-Winston brings science and humanity together to help people live with greater faith, hope, and radical joy while leading lives of purpose through personal and career development.
